The 2030 Agenda adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2015 is a universal roadmap which provides a framework for development cooperation up to 2030, charting a new path of balance for humanity on the planet. The adoption was a pivotal moment in articulating a new vision for reducing poverty, achieve sustainable development and leave no one behind. The Agenda acts as a point of reference for all national development strategies and plans in both developing and developed Countries. At the core of the Agenda is the integrated and indivisible set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 169 targets and 232 indicators that balance the three dimensions of sustainable development namely; Social, economic and environmental and recognize their inter-linkages in achieving sustainable development.

Kenya launched the SDGs process on 14th September 2016. Since then, the country has achieved various milestones towards implementation of the SDGs. To hit the road running, the country developed the SDGs roadmap covering seven broad areas that guided the transition process from MDGs to SDGs. It identified the actions that required to be undertaken to position the country on the fastest and most reliable trajectory possible to achieve the SDGs. These include mapping of stakeholders and establishing partnerships, advocacy and sensitization, domestication/localization, mainstreaming and accelerating implementation, resource mobilization, tracking and reporting and capacity building. The SDGs coordination Directorate is in the forefront to ensure all these areas are successfully implemented in the realization of the 2030 Agenda in the country by 2030.
In 2017, Kenya volunteered to participate in the 2017 High Level Political Forum (HLPF) and presented its Voluntary National Review (VNR) in order to share Kenya’s experience in the implementation of the SDGs two years after adoption. The objectives of this review were to: share experiences in the transition from the MDGs to SDGs; review progress and status on SDGs implementation; highlight progress and initiatives related to eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity to ensure no one is left behind; identify best practices, lessons learnt, emerging issues and areas that would need support in the implementation of the SDGs; identify challenges and actions being undertaken to address the gaps and challenges.
In 2020 Kenya volunteered to take part in the second VNR, which covered the progress made in the creation of an enabling environment for the SDGs implementation as well as progress on all the 17 goals since the first VNR report in 2017. Reporting on all the 17 SDGs provided an important opportunity to: assess the progress made since the 2017 VNR, identify challenges and present the best practices that the country was proudly willing to share with the international community. The report was prepared during the COVID-19 pandemic and was presented virtually at the HLPF in July 2020. In addition Kenya has prepared various reports towards implementation of SDGs Agenda in the country.
